Finding Your “Inner Architect”: Space Design for UDL
The Gould Evans Education Design Studio is focused on the behavioral impacts and learning outcomes associated with learning space. We believe strongly in the value of aligning well-designed space to support principles of UDL. Leveraging the collaborative work with the UDL-IRN, our own research, and a broad and ongoing literature review, we’ll share insights across many important variables related to learning environments: How can learning space empower learner agency? How can learning space advance critical workplace competencies and career readiness? How can learning space better support “purposeful”, authentic, real-world learning? How can learning space help free students from stigmas and labels related to their learning ability? The session will conclude with an introduction to a tool kit that can help every educator find their “inner architect”!

Design for Strategic, Goal-directed Learning
Brain science shows that our frontal lobes do not finish developing until we are in our 20s. Yet, students in our classrooms are expected to be gain mastery over goal setting, progress monitoring, and metacognitive reflection on their own learning. These skills rely on parts of their brain that are still being constructed. What is executive function and why is it so important? In this interactive keynote, we will reflect on neuro-variability in executive function through case examples and brainstorm how Universal Design for Learning can be leveraged to support the design of learning environments that values all learners.

How I Learned to Live with and Design Through My Bias
Educators are a critical factor in facilitating the learning and academic achievement of all students regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, primary language, socioeconomic status, etc. Yet, studies continue to show that educators’ beliefs and attitudes influence expectations of their students.  These beliefs and attitudes are often unconsciously activated. By realizing and identifying these influencers educators begin to address their implicit biases and thereby can intentionally design culturally  inclusive and accessible spaces utilizing the guidelines of UDL. By addressing  intangible barriers educators can positively impact learner resiliency and developmental assets.

Design for Strategic, Goal-directed Learning
In this session, we will examine recent brain science around the interaction of executive function, emotion, and cognition. We will discuss how the core UDL theory and guidelines can support the anticipated variability in executive function of our learners. Join us to participate in a UDL design lab challenge that will offer concrete strategies to support executive function so all of our students can be strategic and goal-directed learners.

Designing Classroom Environments for All
Think about spaces that are inviting, welcoming, and functional, like your favorite coffee shop. These spaces set the stage for fortuitous interactions, creative exchange of ideas and intentional collaboration, all qualities we value in our classrooms. Join us for a virtual tour of a third grade classroom. You’ll hear from students and exchange ideas with their classroom teacher. She’ll share the ideas behind her intentionally designed classroom and what worked and what to avoid. You’ll receive practical advice you can use to inspire you as you rethink your space and design your classroom to meet the needs of all students.
